Hi! I just finished watching the movie and I really don't think they were even close to the island when they disappeared. This is what I got from the ending moments of ht movie that they never saw the island.

I agree with you. She simply ran out of gas and with her map being off by 35 miles it was a natural error. All the stories are just that! Stories. She was a great pilot and Noonan was a grest navigator. The error was in the early aviation period and not enough known. There was no modern navigation or radar etc. But she knew the risk and chose to go anyway. That is just what a real hero is. Ame1

My husband and I just watched the movie a few days ago, and we think it is a wonderful movie...I believe the most credible theory as to why she disappeared was that she ran out of gas......I think she had to use more gas than was the plan due to weather conditions.........In any case, I think she was pretty close to have made it there........

Just saw the movie; great production values and loved the planes and that leather flying get-up Amelia wore!! I can't believe, however, that she was lost thru a simple screw-up like leaving the RDF on all night. This is a Coast Guard cutter, for cryin' out loud! Don't they have another battery?!?!? Don't they have a back-up system, built-in redundancy!?!?!? Can't they simply hook a generator up to the battery. I can't believe the engineering officer couldn't get that RDF going again. Seems like that would have solved everything.

I also saw the recent movie about Amelia Earhardt and it was one of the few recent movies that was a "must see" for me (most of em these days are junk in my opinion). I really liked it for the most part. One part though I think is probably not accurate was the protrayal of Fred Noonan being an alcoholic. There seems to be some controversy about that, but I'm wondering if maybe Hollywood exaggerated it to make the movie interesting. I remember at the end of the movie, just before the plane disappeared, it showed Noonan just sitting in the back of the plane with a blank look on his face. The obvious message here was he messed up the navigation because he was drunk- or hung over. I wonder if maybe he enjoyed a cocktail in the evening and Hollywood trumped that up into a drinking problem?

I have not seen the movie but have read about Amelia Earhart's journey. I have been to Lae, Papua New Guinea where she took off on her last journey. Is it possible that Amelia and Noonan had turned back towards Lae, Papua New Guinea when their fuel was low and communication with Howard Island had failed?There are stories in Bougainville that Amelia's plane ditched near one of the islands in Bougainville.
